Easter Race 2007
A fine days sailing up to buoy 32 with a some interesting sail plans and close quarters action especially at the New Holland mark.  Finally, Cameron skippering Hydra triumphed in this Seasons first event.

Three Creeks 2007

A very gentle start with light variable winds - complete contrast to the day before. An early start was the key with enough water to get into the creeks. Later starters had to do a bit of careful ploughing. This unique race was won by Easter.

Clipper Welcome Race 2007

The ten Clipper Yachts of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race finished the Wilberforce Cup in the Humber Approaches midday Thursday 26th July. The crossing from Rotterdam took a little over 17 hours and there was only a few minutes between all the yachts in the fleet. They had experienced Storm force 10 winds and large waves - a preview of the Southern Ocean maybe. A flotilla of local yachts went out on a grey and breezy Friday afternoon to welcome the fleet, with Yacht Hull & Humber leading.

Eight of the yachts berthed at the Visitor Pontoon in Hull Marina with Hull Sailing Club providing Ship Host services.  Two yachts berthed in adjacent Albert Dock.

The mooring up on the vistors pontoon was an interesting experience. Including one memorable moment of the Lord Mayor of Hull being requested to move quickly before they were warped by an incoming yacht. The Prizegiving and BBQ on Friday saw the presentation of the Wilberforce Cup by Sir Robin Knox-Johnson to Hull & Humber Yacht, skippered by Danny Watson with Sam Willis as watch leader.

The festivities continued to nearly midnight with the HSC Ship Hosts assisting the 200 plus Clipper Crews enjoy the balmy night. We might have some photos - somewhere.

Saturday dawned bright and early!! - with some urgent sail repairs required to staysails from 4 of the Yachts.
With the sail delivery completed to CJ Covers. HSC arranged a laundry run for the crews to Hessle Road.

The repaired sails were picked up and returned to the yachts including the 2 Yachts in Albert Dock . One of which had picked up a line at the anchorage at Hawkins Point and damaged their gearbox. The decision had been made that they would sail back to Gosport with no auxiliary power.

On Saturday afternoon the Zapcats racing started just off the Half Tide Basin and Victoria Pier. The Zapcats are twin hulled ribs with a high power/weight ratio. On the turns they pull up to 3 g and hurtled round the course.

The River Humber took its toll with several crews capzing and the silty water wearing the engines harshly. It was a spectacular spectator sport!   With plenty of spectators lining the Humber Quays and Victoria Pier

On Saturday evening, the HSC Old Town Tour left at 2100 from The Sugar Mill, with crews from the majority of the yachts. They enjoyed an informative visit to the Old Town lead by Paul Schofield an English Heritage accredited Guide. Highlights included Dagger Lane, Princes Street, The Kings Ale House, Wilberforce House, Sailmaker's Arms, Ye Olde White Harte and Trinity Square.
Many of the Clipper Crew want to return to Hull for a longer visit.

Sunday also dawned bright - but not quite so early! The Wilberforce Petition signing ceremony with the Lord Mayor of Hull took place at Humber Quays.
Members of the One Hull Tag team will now take the anti-slavery petition around the world, on the Hull & Humber Clipper yacht.

At 1730 the Clipper Fleet left Hull Marina and Albert Dock to sail up to the Humber Bridge and then sail back past the Humber Quays in formation followed by the Tug Englishman with fire hoses.

Guy Fawkes Race 2007
What a glorious sailing day, with 10 yachts up for the start of an up river race to Brough Outer Marker via every Skipper's favourite mark - New Holland !

It was a good beat up to and past the  Humber Bridge,  which became more interesting as the North channel narrowed and the water depth decreased.  Un beknown to us, the Brough Outer marker had been removed - but everyone improvised with Middle Whitton and made the turn for home.

Then it was time to let the Spinnakers out for an airing.  Some spinnies got more of an airing than others and some had a rinse in the Humber, especially when they were being flown nearly 30 degrees on the wind whilst negotiating the narrow channel back to the Bridge.  Clearances from the riverbed were definitely well below the decimal point !

The actual lead changed several times as boats charged for the finish line. Finally the race was won by Charlotte on corrected time.  The evening bash at the Green Bricks with the live Rock & Roll band was the perfect end to a perfect day.
