Spring Newsletter 2008
Thanks to all who attended this years AGM and greetings to our new members who attended and are hopefully going to support the club events in the coming years.
The 2008 Easter race started well with seven boats taking part, SSW- F5 forecast. New Holland and Lower Whitton was the course. It was all OK until the wind went west and a serious beat developed up the North Channel. Wangdoodle showed her tenacity and navigational skills to round the mark bang on high water, 15 minutes ahead of Xtra-Thyme, to race back to the Minerva, a deserving winner. But unfortunately arrived too late at the Minerva Bar for the prize giving. So Robin is the man to beat this year.
You may be aware that this is our 40th Anniversary year, so the committee and myself are endeavouring to make it a successful year. I have arranged sponsorship for three races and will lean on more people to hopefully get backing for the other races. So as well as winning the cup or chicken, the first prize will be a £50 Kildale voucher, second prize, a bottle of Glenmorangie and third prize a bottle of wine. Plus for the last boat to finish the course, a case of beer!!
If you have paid in full (£10) for this year, there will be a membership card available. Associate members can get a membership card by upgrading to the full rate.
Show this new membership card at Kildale Marine and you should get 10% discount. I have been negotiating with Chris and did not get confirmation before I came away although I am confident.
I assume that all your boats will be looking smart for the start of the season, because we have been approached by a magazine for permission to do a feature and photo shoot at one of our races. I will try and confirm dates on posters, so watch this space.
You may not be aware that I am writing this newsletter from a Hairdressing Conference in Berlin, which to me is traumatic enough, but to get here we flew from Terminal 5 !! On Sunday morning at 0630, we checked in, well impressed with the building, used the fast track bag drop, went straight through body search and grabbed a Starbucks Coffee and a copy of Yachting World. All in one hour, incredible after our apprehension with all the press. But unfortunately it was snowing and we were left sitting on the plane for 6 hours, waiting for someone to clear the snow. If that was bad enough, 9 hours after boarding the plane, we got off in Berlin to find no cases. Unbelievably it got worse, in the next two days, we have had eight cases with our names on delivered to our room, but none of them are ours!!!
So you have a stressed out Commodore trying to include everything in this newsletter.
Enough of my problems, just start making plans for winning some of these prizes and enjoying your sailing. Make notes of all the dates and all the venues for prize giving parties. (all in the new Sailing Program)
Your Commodore
